Energy in Iowa (and the rest of the country)

Learn more about where Iowans get their power, how they use it, and how it relates to global climate change.

  • Iowa Energy Statistics, a US Department of Energy (DoE) site that provides valuable statistics on Iowa’s energy consumption, sources of energy, and emissions.

  • State-by-state statistics on Greenhouse gas emissions and sinks.  Maintained by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  This site provides similar information for Iowa, and also compares all US states here.

  • How much energy do US households consume?  How is the energy in your home being used?  Find out in this report from the US Department of Energy.

  • If you have other questions about energy production and consumption, the DoE’s Energy Information Administration website is a great place to look.

Solutions to Our Environmental Challenges

Are our national and global environmental challenges insurmountable?  Are they hopeless?  No way!  Potential solutions exist in abundance; building a better future just takes a little commitment and ingenuity.  Here are a few of our favorite books, organizations, and proposals for building a healthy and sustainable future:

  • The Rocky Mountain Institute, an optimistic and solutions-oriented consulting firm specializing in energy efficiency.  Great tips to improve our energy efficiency for everyone from individuals, to businesses, to the entire nation.  Check out their book Winning the Oil Endgame: innovation for profits, jobs, and security for a compelling, practical, and (in many cases) profitable plan to end US oil dependence.  Also take a look at this speech (and others) in their audio and video libraries.  Great stuff!

  • Plan B 2.0, a book by Lester Brown, founder of the Worldwatch Institute, detailing simple and practical strategies to overcome our global environmental challenges.

  • The Energize America campaign, yet another set of solutions to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and decrease US dependence on oil.

Answers for Climate Change Skeptics

Let’s be clear:  science is an ever-evolving set of the best explanations for the best available evidence.  And right now, the best science indicates that the climate is getting warmer and that greenhouse gases account for the vast majority of that change.  Still, the persistent doubts of climate change skeptics can be difficult to wade through, sometimes.  Luckily, the folks at Grist have compiled answers to common skeptical arguments, as have members of The Royal Society, the BBC, and the very informative website skeptical science (highly recommended).
