SUSTAINABLE WORKOUTS
Everywhere we look these days someone is coming up with new ways to go green or sustain what we already have in virtually every aspect of our everyday lives. We go green at the grocery store by taking our own re-usable grocery bag; we green up our transportation by car pooling or walking or biking; even sneakers are now made with bio-degradable material. So we’ve pretty much got the bases covered here, right? What about one of the most important aspects of our lives, fitness, health and wellness. Why depend on a piece of equipment or a facility when we have already got an unbelievable facility around us with an amazing view. Dubuque provides scenic views, unique parks and monuments, and enough rolling hills for all of us.
But we have all tried running and let’s face it; it really isn’t for all of us. But what if you could take the traditional running aspect out of it and added a little spice for the attention deficit in all of us. For example, jog to the nearest park, depending on how far the park is from you that can be used as your warm up. When you get to the park stretch out a little bit, catch your breath and look around you. Get creative and almost put yourself back in the mind set of a little kid again and use whatever we have around us as our equipment. The monkey bars at the park are our pull up bars or inverted row bars; the picnic table is perfect for box jumps; the steps to the jungle gym would be great for different variations of pushups and lunges; the list goes on and on and on. Next example, those steps that seem to never end running through a neighborhood (West 11th street steps in Dubuque to be exact), make an obstacle course out of it and challenge yourself with new and different workouts. Part of the fun in these workouts is the variety you have because not every park is the same, or each neighborhood is laid out a little different, or you might have a partner one day and not the next, make it interesting and that is where you will find consistency which will lead to results.
