Diatomaceous Earth

  • Insect control - Natural diatomaceous earth (DE for short) is the remains of microscopic, one-celled plants called diatoms which lived in ancient oceans that once covered much of the world. When these oceans receded, huge deposits of their microscopic, skeletal remains were left behind. This powdery substance is a natural insecticide because (on a microscopic level) it has very sharp edges which lacerate insects upon contact, and it also absorbs moisture. This causes the bugs to dry out and die of dehydration. DE is effective against ants, roaches, fleas, snails, slugs and a variety of other small insects. A small amount of the powder must be spread around wherever the insect problem exists, taking care not to use it in the vicinity of any desirable insects. (Wear a dust mask when applying the powder, as breathing in large amounts of the dust may be harmful.) DE may also be applied directly on pets (avoiding their eyes and faces) and on pet bedding to eliminate fleas and ticks.

  • Parasite control –Food Grade DE may be mixed into pet and animal feed to eliminate and protect against parasite infestation. Follow the instructions that come with the food grade DE or work with a qualified animal health care provider.
